Silvia claims gross title

FALL RIVER -- The weather finally let up long enough to sneak some golf action in during reasonable conditions Monday. And when all the strokes were counted, winners were crowned in both gross and net competition in two divisions of play in the Rhode Island Women’s State Invitational staged at the Fall River Country Club.

A total of 60 male/female teams participated in the day’s play which featured an alternate shot Scotch format, 33 twosomes in the A Division and 27 more in the B Division.

In the A Division, the team of Cindy Silvia, representing the Swansea CC and Rex Dame, playing out of Green Valley, claimed the gross title with an 11-over par 81. That was three shots better than the Newport National CC tandem of Brenda and Mike Narpolillo, who fired an 84 and the Montaup CC duo of Karen Dufault and Rick Mudge, who fired an 87 for third-place honors.

In the division’s net competition, Carol Wilson and Dennis Klinkhammer, both playing out of the Lurel Lane CC, claimed top honors wth a 71. Ann Borges and Ken Conti of Montaup CC were runners-up with a 73, while Jean and Mark Oliveira, also of Montaup, were third after posting a 74.

In the B Division, Ginger Voccola and Earl Strickney, playing out of Fenner Hill, led the field with a 91, five shots better than the runner-up team of Helen and Ray Keough, playing out of the Segregansett CC. Elaine Shanley and Pat McQuenney of Laurel Lane were third with a 97.

In the net competition, Jan and Don Padula of Swansea paced the field with a 72, followed by Sharon and Mike Nowicki, playing out of the Foster CC, who carded a 74. Jackie and Ken Benson, playing out of Pinehurst, were third with a 76.
